Cricket in South Asia is more than just a game. It’s a part of everyday life of every sports enthusiast. While international “hard ball” cricket gets most of the global attention, there’s another version of Tape Ball Cricket that’s thriving in the streets of Pakistan and local parks. And now, for the first time, this fast, gritty style of the game is getting a big professional stage for women through the Women’s Tape Ball Premier League (WTPL) 2025.

What is Tape Ball Cricket?

Before we dive into the league itself, we must understand the “Tape Ball” phenomenon. It originated in Karachi in the 1960s. And like Plato once quoted:

Necessity is the mother of invention

Tape Ball cricket came into existence out of necessity. When young cricketers couldn’t afford expensive leather balls and protective gear, they took a standard tennis ball and wrapped it tightly in electrical tape.

Why tape?

This was their creative genius at play. The tape adds weight, reduces wind resistance, and smooths the surface, allowing the ball to travel faster and “swing” in the air much like a professional cricket ball, but without the risk of serious injury. This accessibility turned cricket from an elite sport into a “Mohalla” (neighborhood) routine and passion.

WTPL 2025: A New Era for Female Athletes

The Women’s Tape Ball Premier League (WTPL) is the biggest platform that’s helping Pakistan’s top female players move from street cricket to the national stage. The event is organized by Badar Expo Solutions along with the Pakistan Tape-ball Foundation (PTBF). This league symbolizes a major step forward making sure the passion for cricket burns bright among youth regardless of gender with everyone having a fair chance to be involved.
