Toss And Team Strategy

India won the toss and chose to field. Their plan worked perfectly. The early swing led to a top-order collapse for Team USA, eventually bowling them out for just 107 runs, which India chased down comfortably (despite a brief rain delay).

How the match unfolded

The Powerplay Overs (1-10)

India’s opening bowlers came out with a clear plan: don’t give an inch. Henil Patel had set the tone immediately with a wicket in his first over, sending a clear message that scoring is going to be hard in this encounter. Patel took the first wicket when the ball had slightly edged Amrinder Gill’s bat.

Whereas in the first innings, the USA batters looked like they were batting underwater, and their every run felt like a massive effort. Deepesh Devendran kept the pressure high at the other end, and by the time the first 10 overs were up, team USA was already two wickets down and barely scoring at three runs an over. It was the perfect “squeeze” start for India.

The Middle Overs (11-40)

Just when the USA tried to catch its breath and rebuild with a small partnership between Nitish Sudini and Arjun Mahesh, Henil Patel returned to effectively end the contest. In the 12th over, he produced a “double-tap” that broke Team USA’s spirit, dismissing their captain, Utkarsh Srivastava, for a duck and removing Mahesh shortly after.

The momentum destabilized completely for the USA. India then introduced their spinners, Khilan Patel and RS Ambrish, who were relentless. They didn’t just hunt for wickets; they dried up the runs so effectively that the USA batters felt compelled to play risky shots just to get off strike. It was an encounter that gave off the vibes of “hunt in packs” bowling style.

Death Overs (41-50)

The game never even made it to the “Death Overs.” Usually, teams try to swing for the fences after the 40th over, but the USA didn’t have the wickets left to even try. The collapse at the end was swift.

India’s Henil Patel came back to put the finishing touches on his career-defining performance, picking up two wickets in two balls, completing his major bowling feat.

The innings ended somewhat abruptly in the 36th over when Vaibhav Suryavanshi came on and struck, removing USA batsman Nitish Sudini, after his 36 runs. India walked off the field having bowled the USA out for just 107 runs, stepping off confident and as a threat to other title contenders.

Standout Performers (USA) – Batting

  • Nitish Sudini: Top-scored with 36 runs, showing maturity while wickets fell around him.
  • Adnit Jhamb: Made a patient 18 off 41 balls but couldn’t convert it into a big score.

The Final Score of Team Batting First (USA)

107 runs and all out on 35.2 overs

Second Inning of India (Batting)

India Squad:

Ayush Mhatre (c)

R.S. Ambrish

Kanishk Chouhan

Deepesh

Mohamed Enaan

Aaron George

Abhigyan Kundu

Kishan Kumar Singh

Vihaan Malhotra

Udhav Mohan

Henil Patel

Khilan A. Patel

Harvansh Singh

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi

Vedant Trivedi

Because of a two-hour rain interruption, India was set a revised DLS target of 96 runs in 37 overs.

Powerplay Overs (1–10)

India, too, was shaken with a quick loss of 3 wickets early on in their chase. Ritvik Appidi was the standout bowler who comfortably dismissed Vaibhav Suryavanshi for 2 runs initially in the 3rd over and Vedant Trivedi for 2 runs in the 5th over. This had caused nervousness for the team and put them under mild pressure at the start, with a score of 25/3. Soon after the 5th over, Rishabh Shimpi dismissed Indian captain Ayush Mhatre for 19 runs in the 6th over. The USA had exerted immense pressure initially. And by the end of the 10th over, India was 59/3; the team was still recovering from the top-order collapse.

Middle Overs (11–17.2)

The match was stabilized by a crucial 45-run partnership for the fourth wicket between Abhigyan Kundu and Vihaan Malhotra. They played with positive intent to keep the required run rate under control and prevent pressure from building. However, Team USA’s captain Utkarsh Srivastava broke the partnership by dismissing Vihaan Malhotra for 18 runs in the 13th over with the score at 70/4. However, this was the last success for the USA as India’s Abhigyan Kundu took complete control of the chase. While the USA fast bowlers (Appidi and Shimpi) had created the early drama, the Indian batters played the spin of Srivastava and Kappa more comfortably, finding boundaries to close in on the target.

Death Overs

There were no “death overs” as India finished the chase so early that the match never reached the tense final phase, usually called the death overs. Abhigyan Kundu stayed unbeaten and played a calm but controlled innings, ensuring that there was no late drama. Kanishk Chouhan scored 10 runs and was not out, while Kundu finished the game in style.

How did India close the innings?

In the match of India U19 vs USA U19 World Cup 2026, India reached the target in the 18th over. Abhigyan Kundu sealed the victory with a massive six to finish the match with 118 balls to spare.

Final score of team India Batting Second?

Scored 99 runs, exceeding the target score of 96 runs due to a finishing sixer on 17.2 overs

Standout Performers – Batting (Second Innings)

Team India had a steady recovery after losing early wickets to ensure a comfortable chase.

Abhigyan Kundu, as a debutant player, became the top scorer in this fixture by calmly scoring 42 runs off 41 balls and staying not out throughout the game. Despite falling to 25/3 earlier, batsmen Kundu and Vihaan Malhotra helped in stabilizing the innings under DLS pressure.

Bowling Impact of India

  • Henil Patel took 5 wickets while giving away just 16 runs in 7 overs. Bowlers Henil Patel and RS Ambrish excellently controlled runs, keeping the scoring rate very low and building pressure on the USA batters in the first innings of the game. As a fielder, Vihaan Malhotra contributed with a crucial run-out and took two catches.

Turning Points of the Match

From early in the game, Henil Patel struck early and took two wickets of the U.S.A, leaving them with 29 runs with the loss of 2 wickets. Later on, the USA team lost 3 wickets after scoring only 10 more runs and got to 39/5. Another significant turning point came after a two-hour delay that had revised the target to 96, briefly giving the USA hope as India lost quick wickets when the match resumed. But Abhigyan Kundu’s positive stroke-play had quickly defused the pressure created by the USA’s early breakthroughs in the second innings.

Captain’s Role & Team Execution

Ayush Mhatre won the toss and correctly opted to bowl first after analyzing the weather and pitch conditions. He efficiently used spinners Khilan Patel and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi to squeeze the middle order. The Captain’s tight inner-ring pressure led to a crucial run-out and soft dismissals for the USA batters. In the overall team discipline, Indian bowlers conceded only 1 wide and 4 leg byes that prevented extra runs from misfields or poor takes; this demonstrated high discipline within the players.

What does this result mean going forward in the tournament?

India takes an early lead at the top of the table. A win with 118 balls to spare provided a massive boost to the Indian team’s Net Run Rate as they started their title defense with a dominant bowling display. However, Team USA needs better resistance against high-quality pace and improved strike rotation.

What’s Next for Both Teams

India’s next match is against Bangladesh on Saturday, Jan 17 2026. The USA’s next challenge is that they must win encounters to keep their chances alive to qualify for the next stage of the competition. When it comes to what improvements are required from each team, India needs a more clinical start from the top order, while the USA needs to build longer partnerships.

Whereas USA bowlers Appidi & Shimpi gave a good competitive play by troubling the Indian top order batsmen.

Overall, after this encounter, India looks like the competitive team to beat in Group B as they chase their sixth title in 2026.
