Match Summary

Aston Villa bounced back with a (3–1) victory against Nottingham Forest in Matchweek 20  after their devastating loss of (1-4) against Arsenal in Matchweek 19. This victory was their  11th straight win at Villa Park, which matches a club record. Ollie Watkins took Villa ahead right at the end of the first half, and John McGinn doubled their lead with (2–0) right after the break.

Forest had their first and only goal when Morgan Gibbs-White created a lovely finish over Emiliano Martínez, but McGinn sealed the win for Villa with his second goal of the night, taking advantage of a goalkeeping mistake to score from distance. This victory lifts Villa up to second place in the League’s table, which is six points behind Arsenal on top and ahead of Manchester City at this point, while Forest remains stuck in 17th place.

Highlights of the Game

  • Villa almost scored in the opening minutes when Morgan Rogers won the ball in Forest’s box, but Ollie Watkins’ attempt was denied by a quick save from Forest’s keeper Victor.
  • Forest had defended deep and made it tough for the Villans to score, but Villa kept on attacking strongly and finally broke through their defense before half-time as Watkins turned and fired a strong shot into the net. (1-0) score.
  • Villa resumed their game in the second half at a fast pace, with John McGinn finishing Matty Cash’s pull-back high into the goal. This goal, though, seemed to wake up Dyche’s team, who suddenly started playing with much more energy and intent. (2-0) score.
  • Forest’s Bakwa first missed a header, but later made up for it by setting up Morgan Gibbs-White, who calmly scored. (2-1)
  • However, Forest’s hopes didn’t last for long, as a poor moment from their goalkeeper let Villa’s McGinn score the decisive goal into an empty net and seal their victory. (3-1) score.

Managerial Quotes

Aston Villa (Unai Emery)

“So good, three points. We needed rest and work to get ready for this match. The players responded fantastically to the demands we set. We needed to score one goal when we had chances to do so. The key was that we didn’t concede a clear transition. We dominated with possession, positioning, and we did it with our mentality to keep our momentum.”

Analytical note:
Villa’s manager sounded pleased with his team and talked about their efficient play in this encounter. He highlighted how the team responded to the challenges in a way that was expected of them. He mentioned how just as important the defensive discipline is because the players didn’t allow the opposition to catch them out on quick counter-attacks, which often change the dynamics of any game.

Nottingham Forest(Sean Dyche)

“A lot of the performance was right for what we wanted to achieve… But you can’t make as many mistakes as we are making lately. Very basic errors, tactical errors from the shape of the team to coming out of slots too early and giving the ball away from simple positions… These are the things that are frustrating for me as a manager and my staff. We are sharing how important it is to do the basics well. Against any team, you can get punished for not doing it, and especially against teams like this who have been purring.”

Analytical note:
Dyche gave an honest and straightforward feedback on how the players made avoidable “errors” that had cost them the game. He critiqued this game as careless play and reflected that with such a game against a well-organized opponent, A poor result is only expected from any team.

Managerial Quotes

Brighton and Hove Albion (Fabian Hürzeler)

“We played a good game. It was not a great game, but a good performance. We scored goals, kept a clean sheet, worked quite well against the ball, and made some more chances, so overall we are pleased with the performance today. We all know that there are still things we can improve, so we have to keep on pushing.”

Analytical note:
Brighton’s coach admired his team’s performance but stayed grounded by commenting that even though they won the game, there was still room for improvement in their performance.

Burnley (Scott Parker)

Analytical note:
Parker had honest remarks about his team in his post-match conference. He admitted that the team gave this victory to their opponents without putting up a good fight. He explicitly expressed disappointment over their game in this matchweek.

Managerial Quotes

Bournemouth (Andoni Iraola)

I’m proud of how we played, but it’s frustrating not to come away with at least a point against the top team.”

Analytical note:
Starting his closing remarks on a positive note shows how the coach is satisfied with the team’s performance, but at the same time, frustrated to not have even a draw point in the end. He clarified that losing by one goal margin against the top team is not what he had expected from the game and his team.

Arsenal (Mikel Arteta)

It is a very different context from the Villa game. We put ourselves into a very difficult position with the manner in which we conceded the first goal, but what Gabriel has done was remarkable; he showed leadership and unity. We then grew into the game and scored two great goals… Declan Rice was struggling the last few days, but pushed and pushed and pushed and made himself available. He played 96 minutes, scored two goals, and was one of the best players on the pitch. That is the mentality we need from all of us.”

Analytical note:
Arteta examined the game as a challenge that got tougher only because the players played in a way that made it difficult for them. He highlighted Rice’s performance and dubbed it the standard bar for the rest of the team.

Managerial Quotes

Everton (David Moyes)

I’m disappointed we didn’t play better. We were just a bit short in some areas. We were disappointing defensively today and not as strong as we have been… We are short on a lot of our creative players, which showed at times. [But] we didn’t do our defensive duties as well as we could have done…. When your center forwards score goals, that’s what we want. Today, they didn’t have the support and back-up. If we’d kept a clean sheet, we could have won. But no complaints, Brentford deserved the victory. “

Analytical note:
Brentford commented in a disappointing tone on the outcome of this match and expressed that due to the unavailability of several of his players, the team faced shortcomings in their play, which otherwise could have been easily avoided by them.

Brentford (Keith Andrews)

“It’s about consistency. I feel the team, squad, and club have taken good steps forward in the last few weeks. They have earned that, to play in this way. We are very respectful of each game. We just keep working hard. A real appetite to improve all the time and push each other and see where we go.”

Analytical note:
Andrews reflected on the game’s outcome by crediting the players’ dedication to improvements, calling it a consistent “appetite”  to move forward in their game.

Managerial Quotes

Newcastle United (Eddie Howe)

I think they were two good moves for the goals that weren’t. We needed that first goal to relax us. I think we got better and better in the game.

Analytical note:
Howe commented on getting the first goal of his club in his closing speech and regarded that first goal as a confidence boost for the team to carry the rest of the game comfortably.

Crystal Palace (Oliver Glasner)

“A disappointing defeat, disappointing result… The most disappointing part for me is conceding another two goals from set-plays – five of our last six defeats, we just conceded goals from set-plays, and then you can’t win games. This is what we have to get sorted.

Analytical note:
Glasner, on the other hand, had disappointment in his tone upon conceding two goals in this encounter and hinted that this part needs to be addressed to avoid such a result in future matches.

Managerial Quotes

Tottenham Hotspur (Thomas Frank)

“I’m pleased with the first half, I think we showed a lot of good intentions, a lot of good play, I think we came into some very good offensive situations where we lacked cutting-edge quality, so that was positive, and I think the big headline is we didn’t score the 2-0 goal.”

Analytical note:
Frank sounded ambitious in his post-match conference and expressed his opinion on how the game should have ended instead of the draw.

Sunderland(Régis Le Bris)

“The first half we were a bit flat, without energy. That could be understandable after the Manchester City game, which was really tough and demanding. We were probably a bit lucky as we conceded only one goal in the first half. We showed good character to survive and then switch on in the second half, and we deserved this result.”

Analytical note:
The Sunderland coach reacted to the draw result as a well-earned point considering the conditions of the players around this encounter. He addressed how his team showed persistence and gave a good play regardless of every struggle they were facing.

Managerial Quotes

Fulham (Marco Silva)

“When we were losing, it was completely unfair for us. We scored an amazing first goal, and we explored that space between the full-back and the centre-back. Brilliant moment from Harrison Reed, it put more fairness in the game.”

Analytical note:
Silva highlighted Reed’s last goal that brought them a draw point instead of losing the game. He viewed this draw as a fair result after this tough game and chaotic performance.

Liverpool (Arne Slot)

“It’s disappointing for us. We fought very hard in the second half, dominated at times, and tried to create chances to get through. At the end, I scored in minute 95, they scored in minute 97 – a wonderful goal to be fair. Unlucky, unfortunate.”

Analytical note:
In the post-match, Liverpool player Gakpo commented on his insight into the way this encounter played out and called out the way the goals were being conceded during the match. He ended his statement by appreciating the final “wonderful” goal of the opponents and called it an “unfortunate” moment for them.

Match Summary

Chelsea had a victorious, disruptive end to the matchweek, snatching a (1-1) draw against Man City thanks to Enzo Fernandez’s last-minute equalizer. Without a permanent manager after Enzo Maresca’s sudden exit, interim boss Calum McFarlane saw his side show real fight as Fernandez scored in the 94th minute. City had led through Tijjani Reijnders just before half-time, but couldn’t control the game. However, Chelsea shone in the encounter with their last-minute equalizing shot. The result leaves City second but six points behind Arsenal.

Highlights of the Game

  • The first half was quiet early on, with Phil Foden firing wide, before Erling Haaland went close to scoring twice but was first stopped by Filip Jorgensen, and then hit the woodwork.
  • City finally broke through just before the break as Reijnders picked up a loose ball, beat Benoit Badiashile, and smashed a left-footed shot into the roof of the net.
  • Chelsea changed things at half-time and nearly levelled when Pedro Neto blazed over from close range after a quick counter.
  • Haaland kept threatening, but Josh Acheampong and Badiashile created tough challenges for him to overcome, while Jorrel Hato also blocked Bernardo Silva from getting a clear shot away.
  • Chelsea’s substitute in the 62nd minute, Liam Delap, created a smart chance for himself in the 72nd minute, but Man City goalkeeper Donnarumma made the save.
  • In stoppage time, Donnarumma could only push Fernandez’s effort back to him, and the Chelsea midfielder reacted fastest to grab a dramatic equalizer.

Managerial Quotes

Manchester City (Pep Guardiola)

“This is what it is. It’s not about expected goals. When you talk about all the stats and all the departments, one of the key questions is how effective you are in the final third. But in general, how we ran and played was okay.”

Analytical note:
City’s coach had a neutral reaction to the draw result against Chelsea and talked about the general play involved in a game, and how it affects the team.

Chelsea (Calum McFarlane)

“It was a great experience. It was a great game to be a part of. I’m really proud of the players and how they performed, especially in the second half. And yeah, great occasion.”

Analytical note:
Chelsea’s interim coach was thrilled to have gained a point against City in his first match with the club.
