Match Summary

Chelsea finally cut off their four-game winless streak in matches with a comfortable win of (2-0) against Everton at Stamford Bridge stadium. Moreover, Cole Palmer returned to play after injury and, midway through the first half, scored his first Premier League goal since September, which gave Chelsea the leading point on the scoreboard. Malo Gusto assisted this first goal and also scored an individual goal, making it 2-0, just before halftime. On the other hand, Everton had a few chances too to get back into the game, but they couldn’t find a breakthrough after halftime, and Iliman Ndiaye made an “almost goal” later on by hitting the goalpost. This win lifts Chelsea into fourth place, moving above Crystal Palace, while Everton slips to eighth, four points behind Chelsea.

Highlights of the Game

  • Chelsea had scored first in the 21st minute when Malo Gusto made a smart pass to Cole Palmer, who then finished calmly in a successful goal past the goalkeeper.
  • Chelsea almost scored again soon after, but Alejandro Garnacho’s shot went just wide after a poor back pass from Carlos Alcaraz.
  • Everton then had their chances, with Thierno Barry missing a close chance and Robert Sánchez making a save to stop Jack Grealish.
  • Even though Everton were trying to attack aggressively, Chelsea scored again when Gusto tapped in a pass from Pedro Neto.
  • In the second half, Chelsea’s Garnacho came close twice from tight angles, while Reece James forced a good save with a free-kick.
  • Everton kept trying to get back into the game, with Iliman Ndiaye hitting the post and a late shot being blocked, but they couldn’t score and ended up losing the match.

Managerial Quotes

Chelsea (Enzo Maresca)

“The game is never finished. We had many chances, but we missed. But overall I’m happy with the clean sheet and the performance… We said many times with Cole [Palmer], we are a better team. Unfortunately, he was out for many games for us, but now he’s back, and for sure he will help us.”

Analytical note:
Chelsea’s coach expressed his joy after his team had a dominant win in the match. While appreciating his team’s performance. He highlighted Cole Palmer’s presence as a positive impact in the group and looks forward to having great games ahead with his return to the team.

Everton (David Moyes)

I know we’ve come away with a disappointing result, but it wasn’t a disappointing performance. We did a lot of really good things today.”

Analytical note:
Moyes also focused on the bright side of this encounter and how, regardless of the clean sheet, he highlighted that the team had performed exceptionally well in the play. His words reflect the unpredictable nature of football, which can have hard playing but still yield a clean sheet at times.

Match Summary

Liverpool defeated Brighton with a 2-0 score at Anfield, with Hugo Ekitike scoring twice and Mohamed Salah providing an assist on his return to the team as a substitute player on Saturday, a week after he took aim at the club in a fiery interview. in this game. Salah got substituted in the 26th minute in place of the injured Joe Gomez(who was forced off with a knock), while Ekitike had already opened the scoring with the fastest Premier League goal of the season after just 46 seconds into the game. Ekitike then scored again from a Salah corner. This gave Salah a new record for being directly involved in more goals for a single club (Liverpool) than any other player has for their respective club. Salah missed a chance later in the game. Regardless, Liverpool dominated the match, giving a clean sheet to the Seagulls. This win lifts Liverpool to sixth place with 26 points, three points and three spots above Brighton.

Highlights of the Game

  • Brighton got into trouble early in the game when Yankuba Minteh sliced a clearance shot to J. Gomez, who is a Liverpool defender. Then Gomez nodded the ball down to Ekitike to score a great opener.
  • Minteh tried to make up for his mistake, curling a shot past the post and setting up his teammate D. Gomez, but Alisson(Liverpool’s goalkeeper) saved the shot from hitting the back of the net one-on-one.
  • After Salah came on at 26′, Liverpool looked even more dangerous, with one move ending in Ekitike shooting just wide.
  • J. Gomez hit the post early in the second half from a Mats Wieffer cross, and Brajan Gruda also missed a chance for his club Brighton.
  • Liverpool had the score turned to (2-0) on 60′, as Ekitike, unmarked, got powered in from a Salah corner.
  • Brighton’s Kaoru Mitoma got substituted at 64, and his shot went wide while Salah missed to score a late chance to make it a possible 3rd score.

Managerial Quotes

Liverpool (Arne Slot)

“Hard work. We had to work really hard for this win because we faced a very good team that kept going to the end. For the first time in weeks, I feel like we had a bit of luck today.”

Analytical note:
Slot remarked in a humble post-match comment on how hard his team had worked to prepare for competing against their strong opponent. He also justly credited luck being on their side in this encounter.

Brighton and Hove Albion (Fabian Hürzeler)

“We deserved more, maybe even a win, because we created so many chances. We didn’t have the best start to the game, but I thought we reacted well and then had a set-piece against us for their second goal, which we didn’t defend that well.”

Analytical note:
Brighton’s coach sounded frustrated with the outcome of this encounter, blaming his team’s poor defense and attacks that caused them a clean sheet loss.

Managerial Quotes

Burnley (Scott Parker)

“I understand their frustration. This is the world we’re in currently. I get it. How the world of football is: the instant reaction is to boo… It breaks my heart at the end of the game because we came here today wanting to please our fans and wanting them to support us. ”

Analytical note:
Parker got a little emotional during his closing words after his team lost a close match by 1 score. He expressed his disappointment with the fans as they booed at them as they lost a tough game, which is when their support is much needed.

Fulham (Marco Silva)

“It’s a well-deserved win, an important win, and a big win for us… When I was told about Fulham’s record in this match, not winning here since 1951, I was a little bit in shock, but we spoke about it and said we have to stop it.”

Analytical note:
On the other hand, Silva called the win a well-earned victory for his players. He went on to reveal how this win was their only option to break the history of winless games at this venue.

Managerial Quotes

Arsenal (Mikel Arteta)

We did find a way, and that’s a very positive thing, if not we’d be very frustrated and rightly so…but that’s it – win the game and go on.”

Analytical note:
Arteta subtly hinted at how the outcome of the match turned out to be in their favor, even when his team hadn’t conceded a goal themselves. He reflected on the core target of any match, which is to win before moving on to the next challenge.

Wolves (Rob Edwards)

The lads gave everything. I’m proud of a lot of it tonight, but it hurts. I hate losing games. We all do. We’ve lost far too many, but I think we’re going about it in the right way to try to turn things around. You can see it tonight – there’s a team that’s committed. They’re sticking together, they’re fighting, and I feel for the supporters. A big thank you to them for coming all the way down here and backing us right to the end there. I feel for them, because it’ll be hard for them at the moment.”

Analytical note:
Edwards defended his players by shifting the focus to their efforts and the challenging fight that they had demonstrated in the game. His players had not conceded any shots from opponent teams despite their aggressive attacks, and in his view, this says a lot about their team play and strength. Nevertheless, since his team lost due to their own mistakes, the manager called this a tough pill and a difficult moment for the players to be in after this match.

Managerial Quotes

Crystal Palace (Oliver Glasner)

I think City were better in the box. We had 16 shots, and losing 3-0 is a tough moment. We will take our lessons from this game. We need these games to grow, develop, and progress.

Analytical note:
Glasner commented on how tough losing is for his team when they had 16 shots to benefit from, and despite that, they lost the game. He reflected that the team will take lessons from this game and equip them with better playing strategies.

Manchester City (Pep Guardiola)

“We have tried to work a lot and be ourselves, but still we are not at the top in some moments. But we can be better and better. We are in a good position, and the players are doing fantastic so far.

Analytical note:
After winning this game, Guardiola chose to stay grounded and still learn from whichever weak points came up during their play. He also commended his players for performing well so far.

Match Summary

After (3-0) lost in Matchweek 15 against Everton, Nottingham Forest bounced back and won, coincidentally with the same score of (3-0), this time against Spurs. Forest’s Callum Hudson-Odoi became the man of the match in this encounter, scoring two goals himself and setting assisted brahim Sangare with a superb long-range goal. This win moved Forest five points above the relegation zone, while Spurs had missed their chance to climb into the top half of the League’s table and remain at 11th position.

Highlights of the Game

  • Forest started off early in the game and nearly scored when Sangare’s header attack had hit the post, and Williams’ follow-up shot also got saved.
  • Forest took the lead again in the 28th minute when Sangare stole the ball and set up Hudson-Odoi to score.
  • Gray almost scored for Spurs, but Forest’s debutant player Victor made a good save.
  • Hudson-Odoi scored again early in the second half with a curling shot that Spurs goalkeeper Vicario couldn’t stop. The score was (2-0) at this point.
  • Despite Hutchinson missing a chance for Forest, they got their third goal when Sangare finished Hudson-Odoi’s pass in the 79th minute.

Managerial Quotes

Nottingham Forest (Sean Dyche)

It’s choosing when to press. It’s the football intelligence to see a bad ball and when someone is under pressure. Seeing it and activating it is something these lads are improving at.”

Analytical note:
Forest’s head coach took a technical tone while addressing the game and subtly hinted at how the team is improving from their past weaknesses.

Tottenham Hotspur (Thomas Frank)

“It’s very simple. If you don’t perform, you can say all the right things, but if you’re a little bit out of sync, then you see things like this. When you are on track and in sync, you see the last three performances. That’s very simple. If you perform, you keep doing the right thing, then it makes it easier, of course, and then I just think the little small thing that is difficult. We win together, we lose together, but I can’t pass the ball on the pitch. So, if we lose the ball 25 times, I think it’s fair to say that it’s pretty difficult to create something.”

Analytical note:
Frank sounded brutally honest and straightforward in his closing remarks, implying that his team had not performed as per their potential, which caused such a loss on their part compared to how they performed in their past encounter.

Match Summary

Sunderland won an intense and close match against Newcastle with a (1-0) score, in a big local rivalry match at the Stadium of Light, thanks to an early second-half own goal by New castles’ Nick Woltemade. The Magpies couldn’t fight back, and tensions flared briefly later on in the game. Sunderland celebrated their fourth straight home win over their rivals. This win moved Sunderland up to seventh position and four points ahead of Newcastle, who remain at 12th position and continue to struggle against Sunderland.

Highlights of the Game

  • Both teams struggled to get going in the first intense local rivalry between Sunderland and Newcastle in around 10 years.
  • The first real chance came in the 22nd minute when Sunderland’s Enzo Le Fee’s shot was blocked, and Granit Xhaka also tried to attack but missed it.
  • Newcastle got a blow when Dan Burn went off injured before half-time, leaving them vulnerable against aerial challenges, and consequently, Sunderland’s Dan Ballard attempted an unsuccessful attempt to score and outjumped Newcastle’s Tino Livramento to head the ball, but the ball went over the goal.
  • Early in the second half, Sunderland finally got their lead in an unexpected way when Newcastle’s Woltemade accidentally headed Mukiele’s cross into his own net.
  • Sunderland’s Wilson Isidor, who got substituted at 70′, tested Newcastle’s goalkeeper Ramsdale, while Newcastle’s Yoane Wissa (substituted at 75′) almost scored from a pass by Jacob Murphy, but didn’t quite connect.
  • Late on, the game got tense with four players booked, but Sunderland held on for the win.

Managerial Quotes

Sunderland (Régis Le Bris)

Proud and happy. It was a derby, and we were expected us to win by our fans. This win is well deserved. We were mature, and the lads were incredible.

Analytical note:
Sunderland’s coach beamed with joy upon his team’s close and well-earned victory after a tough encounter. He also appreciated the growth in the skills of his players’ performances.

Newcastle United (Eddie Howe)

“It was not our finest game. The effort was there, but the quality was not. It was a game of really few chances decided by a freak goal, and we could not create the opening we wanted.”

Analytical note:
Howe, on the other hand, was rightfully disappointed with his team for not giving their best in this encounter. He acknowledged how his team had created goal chances but couldn’t break the ice of a clean sheet.

Analytical note:
West Ham’s coach commented subtly that to get out of trouble and climb up the table, his team has to take responsibility for itself and pull itself up.

Aston Villa (Unai Emery)

“We are not feeling under pressure. We are feeling ambitious, and we try to challenge ourselves in Europe and in the Premier League. Enjoy each match, try to prepare, then rest. The players must feel comfortable doing it.”

Match Summary

With a late header by Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Leeds United got to draw the match with a (1-1) score against Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium. His goal came from Wilfried Gnonto’s (substituted at 73′) cross in the 82nd minute of the game. This marked his fourth consecutive Premier League game with a goal. Brentford had taken the lead through Jordan Henderson’s first goal since December 2021.  Kelleher (Brentford’s goalkeeper) made a good save to stop Ethan Ampadu (Leeds player) from scoring a potential winning goal. Because of this save, Brentford couldn’t lose, and the match concluded the encounter with a draw point. However, even the draw was a positive outcome for Brentford, as it ended their two-game losing streak, while Leeds moved three points above the relegation zone, and Brentford remained in 14th place.

Highlights of the Game

  • The first half of the game was quiet with few chances. Brentford looked set for a penalty when Ouattara was fouled, but VAR ruled he was offside.
  • Lewis-Potter challenged Leeds keeper Perri before half-time, but nothing came of it.
  • After the hour, Brentford brought on Henry and Damsgaard to lift the team.
  • The substitutes combined to set up Henderson, whose shot was deflected in by Leeds’ Bijol in the 70th minute.
  • Leeds tried to push back, with Aaronson and Okafor nearly scoring, but Brentford’s goalkeeper Kelleher made a key save.
  • Calvert-Lewin headed in Gnonto’s cross to equalize the score, though Kelleher kept Brentford in the game by tipping Ampadu’s shot wide.

Managerial Quotes

Brentford (Keith Andrews)

“We knew it was going to be very difficult; they’ve changed the system and the way they play, so we were always very respectful, but like I said, overall I think it was probably a fair result.”

Analytical note:
Andrews remarked how the team was prepared for a tough challenge in this encounter and called this draw a fair result compared to how both teams played.

Leeds United (Daniel Farke)

“We were convinced in the week, during the week, and right now after the week. Of course, there is no replacement for wins, so it is always good for the mood, the confidence, and for the table, so for that, yes, we had a good week. I am happy with this, but we are already in the mode to prepare for the next important game on Sunday.”

Analytical note:
While commenting on whether this positive result has given him and the team belief they can stay in the game, Farke commented that a win cannot be replaced by any other outcome in a game; he reflected that having a draw point keeps the team in the preparation mode for their next challenge.

Managerial Quotes

Manchester United (Ruben Amorim)

“It was a fun game for everyone at home. I think we lost. If you look at the game, you can think that we lost the two points in the second half, but I think we lost the two points in the first half. “

Analytical note:
Amorim reflected on how the game had become an interesting encounter for all viewers, even at home, and explained how he saw this game as a coach.

Bournemouth (Andoni Iraola)

“I think we finished the first half well. When we scored the 1-1, we were feeling comfortable, and we were finishing the half much better. That’s why the goal we conceded just from the corner has hurt me because we were in a good moment.”

Analytical note:
Iraola shared how disappointing it was to go from a comfortable point to conceding a tough goal from the corner.

FAQs | EPL Matchweek 16

Q1. Who were the big winners this week?

Both Arsenal and Manchester City, the top teams, were able to win and preserve their advantage.  Chelsea and Liverpool also got back on track by winning.  Aston Villa’s comeback win was really spectacular and maintains them near the top!

Q2. Was there a big surprise or upset in EPL matchweek 16?

Yes! The biggest surprise was how poorly Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) lost.  Nottingham Forest, a team that is far lower in the rankings, beat them 3-0.  This was a bad day for Spurs fans, who had been doing well lately.

Q3. What was the result of local rivalry matches in EPL matchweek 16?

The Tyne-Wear derby was a massive, exciting clash between Sunderland and Newcastle United.  Sunderland won 1-0 in a very close and tense game. They’ve been performing surprisingly well lately.  Their followers were quite happy with the win!

Q4. Which team won most excitingly in EPL matchweek 16?

Aston Villa would have to be that.  West Ham was ahead 2-0 early on, but they came back really hard in the second half and won 3-2.  It was a great example of working together and being determined!

Q5. Did any star players do something special?

Yes, of course!  Mohamed Salah from Liverpool broke the club record for “goal involvements,” which include goals scored and assists given. This shows that he is still a legend.  Also, Arsenal’s success was a little strange because the opposing team, Wolves, accidentally scored two goals for them (called “own goals”), which helped Arsenal win by a hair, 2-1.
